The Energy Watch Group is characterized by an interdisciplinary team and board featuring leading experts in energy and climate politics, economics, policy advocacy and communications. In our work, we draw on long-standing professional experience in politics and science, and complement our competencies with highly qualified project partners. Our team collaborates digitally and from our office in Berlin Mitte.

Executive Board

Hans-Josef Fell

Hans-Josef Fell

President of the Energy Watch Group
Together with a group of parliamentarians and scientists, Hans-Josef Fell initiated the Energy Watch Group in 2006, and has since served as its president. He sets the organization’s strategic direction, and utilizes his vast expertise in energy and climate politics to foster political dialogue and public discourse. Hans-Josef Fell was a member of German Parliament for the Green Party from 1998 to 2013 and drafted the 2000 Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the foundation for the expansion of renewable energy in Germany and worldwide. Until today, the law has been replicated over 100 times around the globe and can be seen as the legal prototype for the global rollout of renewables.
Hans-Josef Fell holds academic degrees in physics and physical education at the teaching level. He was awarded with multiple prizes and awards, such as the Lui Che Woo Prize for his lifetime achievement in environmental and climate policy, the order of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Nuclear-Free Future Award, and many more.

Doreen Rietentiet

Managing Director
Doreen Rietentiet co-founded the Global Energy Transition gGmbH, the non-profit organization parenting the Energy Watch Group, and serves as its managing director. She has been working in the climate tech and renewables industry for the past 15 years, helping corporations and organisations with brand, positioning and strategic communication. Before joining the energy and climate tech sector, Doreen Rietentiet has worked as a broadcast journalist for more than a decade for various TV networks, like the German ARD, CNN and others. She is the co-founder of the climate and cleantech advisory DWR eco, and co-initiated Leaders for Climate Action as well as Entrepreneurs for future.
Doreen Rietentiet holds Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration from Humboldt University Berlin and in Marketing Design from Parsons School of Design, and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of London.

David Wortmann

Member of the Board
David Wortmann strategically advises the Energy Watch Group, drawing on substantial experience in climate politics and strategic communications. He helped prepare the foundation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and looks back at many years of political work, including as a research assistant in the German Bundestag. He is founder of several companies and initiatives in the field of renewable energy and climate protection. For more than 20 years, he has been politically, entrepreneurially and communicatively committed to the scaling of technologies and business models for the ecological transformation of the economy.
David Wortmann has studied International Business and Politics at the University of Passau (Germany), University of Córdoba (Spain), and University of Cardiff (UK).

Prof. Dr. Christian Breyer

Chairman of the Scientific Board
Prof. Dr. Christian Breyer is a Professor for Solar Economy at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finnland. His major expertise is the integrated research of technological and economic characteristics of renewable energy systems, energy system modeling and 100 % renewable energy scenarios. Previously he was a managing director of the Reiner Lemoine Institute, Berlin. Christian Breyer holds a doctorate in the field of economics of hybrid PV power plants and authored and co-authored about 90 scientific publications.

Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert

Chairman of the Scientific Board
Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert is a Professor of Energy Economics and Sustainability at Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and Head of the department Energy, Transportation, Environment at the German Institute of Economic Research (DIW Berlin). Her research activities concentrate on the evaluation of climate and energy policy strategies. Claudia Kemfert advised EU president José Manuel Barroso in a “High level Group on Energy and Climate”, and acts as an external expert for the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).
